Description

Plumeria 'Black Purple'

Plumeria 'Black Purple,' also known as 'Muang Anchan' or 'Violet Anchun,' is an extraordinary Thai cultivar celebrated for its rare and unique coloration, sweet fragrance, and adaptability to tropical climates. This remarkable variety stands out for its deep violet-purple hues that intensify with heat, creating an unforgettable visual display.

Rare Violet-Purple Blooms with Orange Center

The flowers of 'Black Purple' measure approximately 3 inches and feature oval petals with a slightly overlapping structure. The blooms transition from dark purple with golden-orange centers to bluish-purple with age. During the height of summer, the edges can turn black under intense heat and humidity, creating a dramatic contrast. This plum-colored variety is one of the darkest violet-purple plumerias available, making it highly sought after.

Sweet Medium-Intensity Fragrance

The blooms emit a medium-intensity sweet fragrance, adding a delightful sensory experience to their striking appearance. The mild scent is both pleasing and subtle, complementing the unique coloration.

Medium Growth Habit with Thick Texture

'Black Purple' grows at an average rate and features medium green elliptical leaves with lighter veining and pointed tips. The thick petal texture enhances its durability and contributes to the blooms' lasting quality. While its growth habit is average, it branches well and performs best when grafted.

Blooming and Seed-Setting Capability

A good bloomer, 'Black Purple' produces consistent floral displays throughout the season. This variety is also capable of setting seed, making it a valuable choice for breeding and hybridization projects.

Historical and Regional Significance

Originating in Thailand, 'Black Purple' is named after the butterfly pea flower ("Anchan" in Thai), known for its deep blue-purple coloration. While it shares similarities with the cultivar 'Anchan Purple,' 'Black Purple' is noted for its pinkish undertones and unique color transitions, setting it apart.

In Summary

Plumeria 'Black Purple' is an average-growing tree with 3-inch violet-purple flowers featuring golden-orange centers and black edges during intense heat. Its unique coloration, sweet fragrance, and good blooming habit make it a prized addition to any collection.

Very healthy, had my first fluorescence this year. Heat definitely makes the bloom several shades darker.
