Description

Plumeria 'Mermaid Gem'

Plumeria 'Mermaid Gem,' also known as Kalina (similar but hardier), Wedgetail, Elsie Rose, Elise Rose (sic), Siara's Gift, is a captivating variety originating from Mermaid Beach, Queensland, Australia. This stunning plumeria is celebrated for its bright crimson blooms with a vibrant yellow center, making it a standout in any collection.

Unique Characteristics

The flowers of 'Mermaid Gem' measure around 3 inches in diameter, featuring round, pointed petals with a very slight overlap. The blooms display a bright crimson color that can intensify to fire engine red in strong heat. The yellow center is well-defined, adding a striking contrast. As the flowers age, faint white tones may appear near the edges.

Foliage and Growth Habit

The tree exhibits an average growth habit with branches that alternate between bifurcating and trifurcating. Its medium green leaves are acuminate with pointy tips and a smooth texture. The petioles are orange-brown, complementing the vibrant colors of the flowers.

Fragrance

The blooms emit a mild, sweet sugary scent, reminiscent of fairy floss or cotton candy, adding to its charm.

Blooming and Performance

'Mermaid Gem' is a great bloomer, producing sparse clusters of flowers distributed throughout the tree. The blooms are not long-lasting when picked, but the continuous display on the tree ensures a visually captivating presence.

Propagation and Challenges

This variety is known to be difficult to root. However, its beauty and distinctive features make it a worthwhile challenge for dedicated plumeria enthusiasts.

Historical Notes

Named after Mermaid Beach in Queensland, this variety carries a piece of Australian heritage. Unfortunately, the original tree no longer exists. It is sometimes confused with similar varieties like Gold Coast Cotton Candy, but its darker hues and distinct petal shape set it apart.
