Description
Plumeria 'Scarlet Knight'
Plumeria 'Scarlet Knight' (Reg. #270), also known as 'Wildfire,' is a striking cultivar renowned for its bold dark red blooms, spicy clove fragrance, and excellent keeping quality. Discovered in Hawaii by Barbara Randolph in 1989 and officially registered in 2004, this variety boasts a rich history and exceptional beauty.
Bold Red Blooms with Golden Center
The flowers of 'Scarlet Knight' measure 3 1/2 to 4 inches and feature a solid dark red coloration with a golden center. The elliptical petals are moderately overlapped with rounded tips, creating a classic and balanced floral shape. The reverse side of the petals displays dark red bands and white veining, adding depth and visual intrigue.
Spicy Clove Fragrance
The blooms emit a strong spicy clove fragrance, a hallmark of this cultivar. The scent is distinctive and complements the vibrant red coloration, making it a favorite among gardeners who value both visual and aromatic appeal.
Average Growth with Poor Branching
'Scarlet Knight' grows at an average rate, tending toward taller growth, but it has a poor branching habit. The elliptical green leaves with red edges and acute tips contribute to the plant's striking appearance. Despite its limited branching, the blooms' beauty and quality more than compensate.
Excellent Keeping Quality and High Tendency to Fade
The flowers have excellent keeping quality, ensuring their vibrant appearance lasts. However, they have a high tendency to fade over time, transitioning to softer tones that still maintain their charm.
Historical Significance
Discovered in Hawaii and named by Barbara Randolph, 'Scarlet Knight' has a rich history spanning over 25 years. Although it shares the alias 'Wildfire,' its registered name remains 'Scarlet Knight,' ensuring its unique identity within the plumeria community.
In Summary
Plumeria 'Scarlet Knight' is a medium-to-tall-growing tree with 3 1/2 to 4-inch dark red flowers featuring a golden center and a spicy clove fragrance. Its bold blooms, excellent keeping quality, and historical significance make it a cherished addition to any collection.
